San Francisco police lieutenant Abe Glitsky, demoted to payroll after suffering a gunshot wound, and attorney Dismas Hardy search for the real killer of Glitsky's father's best friend when a friend of Hardy is railroaded by the police department.

San Francisco defense attorney Dismas Hardy takes on the apparently simple caseload of a lawyer who has disappeared and becomes embroiled in a murder case involving a National Guard Reservist who served in Iraq, the ex-Navy SEAL and private contractor who slept with the reservist's girlfriend, and, possibly, a conspiracy led by the U.S.

When the death of the head of San Francisco's largest HMO in his own hospital turns out to be murder the attending physician, Dr. Eric Kensing, turns to lawyer Dismas Hardy to defend him. As Hardy attempts to find the real culprit he uncovers a twisted conspiracy of greed and death.
