Captain Jean-Luc Picard, having conducted breakthrough negotiations with an agressive race called the Gorn, is headed to the Gorn Homeworld to continue his work when he is suddenly hurled through time and space to a planet called Cestus III at a crucial turning point in Federation history.

Past and future merge as the captains of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 and NCC-1701-D, Kirk and Picard, embark on separate resuce missions and end up with the fate of each other's starships on their hands.
