Dave Robicheaux, a police officer in New Iberia, Louisiana, is forced to confront his past when he returns to New Orleans to investigate a brutal attack on his old friend, Father Jimmie Dolan, a controversial Catholic priest, while back at home three teenage girls are killed in a drunk driving accident, sparking a violent retaliation.

Iry Paret, just freed from prison in Louisiana, makes his way to Montana where he becomes involved with the family of one of his ex-jail mates and their fight against a local pulp mill.
