In the early 1980s, the passionate relationship between young friends-turned-lovers Adam LaSalle, a star in Mikhail Baryshnikov's American Ballet Theater, and Sandra Ellis, a corps dancer in the New York City Ballet, is strained when the aging George Balanchine sets out to stage a new production of "Sleeping Beauty" with Sandra as its star.
