Brenna, haunted by the fact that she turned in her best friend and fellow outcast White Bird after seeing him kneeling over the dead body of a classmate, returns to Oklahoma two years later to find that he has never been tried but is still languishing in a mental hospital, locked in his tormented brain, and though no one wants her to get involved, Brenna know she has to help him.
