Esther and twenty-nine of her fellow classmates are abducted from their Catholic boarding school by Joseph Kony's rebel forces in Uganda and forced into the Lord's Resistance Army. When Jane, an American writer, comes to Africa to find and report on the thirty abducted girls, the two young women are brought together in the midst of violence and heartbreak.

Ugandan teenager Esther, having been abducted with twenty-nine classmates by Joseph Kony's rebels, is forced to witness and commit atrocities, while American journalist Jane, who came to Africa to recover from a devastating divorce, is absorbed in a group of glamorous expatriates and searches for information about Esther and the other girls.

Special affections and loyalties develop among the seven children of the privileged and wealthy Massachusetts family of Rosie and Augustus Paine Vincent.
