After a women's basketball game in mid-winter, a construction owner H.H. Donaldson falls dead in the parking lot, and while "Harry" Haristeen and the police begin an investigation a second death occurs, and one of Harry's favorite felines Mrs Murphey takes on the case.

Feline detective Mrs. Murphy and her furry cohorts Pewter and Tee Tucker have their paws full trying to help their human solve a series of murders in their hometown.

Harry, her best friend Susan, and Harry's trusted animals retreat to a mountain monastery for some R and R only to find their peaceful holiday interrupted by the discovery of Susan's great Uncle Thomas' frozen body beneath the statue of the Virgin Mary.

The Christmastime cheer is diminished after Mary Minor "Harry" Haristeen and her husband find a dead body in their chosen Christmas tree at The Brothers of Love run tree farm, which turns out to the first in a series of murders that Harry and her feline sleuths are determined to solve.

Mary Minor "Harry" Haristeen, postmistress in the tiny Virgina town of Crozet, is anxious about her upcoming twenty year class reunion, and her anxiety reaches a peak when members of the Class of 1980 start turning up dead.
