War on our doorstep

the unknown campaign on North America's West Coast
2002
In June 1942, Japanese troops occupied the Aleutian islands of Attu and Kiska in Alaska, the first enemy occupation of U.S. territory since the War of 1812. For the next year Canadian and American soldiers, airmen, and sailors went north to hold the Japanese back. In the meantime Japanese subs lurking off the West Coast sunk ships, shelled the coast of British Columbia, launched an airplane from a sub that bombed Oregon's forests, and tried to use balloon-bombs that would cross the Pacific to North America. This is the complete story of how World War II affected people in British Columbia, California, Oregon, the State of Washington, and Alaska.
