During Lenten season in the Adirondack town of Millers Kill, priest Clare Fergusson and married police chief Russ Van Alstyne fight their attraction to each other while investigating the disappearance of a physician from a charitable clinic owned by wealthy widow Jane Ketchem, whose husband also mysteriously disappeared in 1930.
