Captain Richard Sharpe, his crew disgraced after losing their regimental King's Colour in battle against Napoleon at Talavera, must overcome resentment from within the ranks to redeem the honor of his regiment by capturing one of the French army's valued Imperial Eagles.

Temporary Captain Richard Sharpe must redeem the disgrace of his regiment in having lost its colors in combat by capturing one of the gold eagles given by Napoleon to each of his regiments.
