Boston private investigator Spenser takes it personally when he tells his client, FBI agent Dennis Doherty, that his wife, Jordan, is having an affair, only to have the couple murdered, and he sets out to bring Jordan's lover, Perry Alderson, head of a group that helps sponsor terrorists, to justice.

Spenser almost gets himself killed trying to help out friends when he agrees to check out the reasons why Robinson Nevins was denied tenure at the university, while also attempting to come to the aid of K. C. Roth, a stalking victim who finds Spenser very much to her liking.
