In the winter of 1564, young Princess Margot is sent to the court of France to marry Henri of Navarre in a political alliance planned by her mother, Queen Catherine de M?dicis. When Margot's wedding turns into a violent massacre, she will be forced to choose between her family and her soul.

Crispin and Troth, wandering the French countryside following the death of their beloved mentor, Bear, find refuge at a convent, and when Troth decides to stay, Crispin continues on alone, joining a band of traveling musicians who he soon realizes are murderous thieves.

After the death of their mentor, Bear, Crispin and Troth search for Iceland. Bear had told them of this land where they could live in freedom. Their search leads them into danger and Crispin must decide what freedom is worth to him.
