Squib comes home from summer camp to find that his older brother, Andrew, has turned into a snarly, surly, defiant, and non-communicative adolescent. The story explores the effect of Andrew's new behavior on Squib and the entire family unit.

Although he is a tiny owl that cannot hoot or fly, Squib's curiosity leads him into adventures that sometimes inspire frightening emotions that he must learn to identify and express.

Troubled because he can only toot and not hoot like the other owls, Squib finally learns that it is how one uses one's individual talents that makes the difference.
