Follows two biologists as they study the behavior and everyday life of bottlenose dolphins in Shark Bay, Australia.

In 1982 Rachel Smolker traveled to Australia where she'd heard that wild dolphins regularly interacted with people. Her trip started a fifteen-year scientific obsession that has produced an intimate account of dolphin life in the wild.

The author describes her experiences as one of a group of scientists who spent fifteen years exploring the lives of dolphins in their natural environment at Monkey Mia beach in Australia; and shares what her research has revealed about dolphin society and the characters that inhabit it.

Photographs and text recount the experiences of Janet Mann and her research team observing the dolphins of Shark Bay, in Western Australia, describing the discoveries they made about dolphin intelligence and behavior.
