Alice Cole, sold as an indentured servant by her father, lives and works comfortably in the home of John Morton and his daughter Nabby, but when Nabby marries, Alice's contract is turned over to Nabby's cruel husband Mr. Verley whose abuse drives Alice to run away to Boston where she finds refuge with widow Lyddie Berry and her lawyer companion Eben Freeman, who stand by Alice when she learns she is pregnant and is then charged with a number of crimes.
