Torpedoed

A true account of the attack and sinking of the passenger ship SS City of Benares, which was evacuating children from England during WWII.

Attacked at sea

a true World War II story of a family's fight for survival
"On May 19, 1942, during WWII, a U-boat in the Gulf of Mexico stalked its prey fifty miles from New Orleans. The submarine set its sights on the freighter Heredia. Most onboard were merchant seamen, but there were also civilians, including the Downs family: Ray and Ina, and their two children. Fast asleep in their berths, the Downs family had no idea that two torpedoes were heading their way. When the ship exploded, chaos ensued--and each family member had to find their own path to survival. This inspiring historical narrative tells the story of the Downs family as they struggle against sharks, hypothermia, blinding oil, drowning, and dehydration in their effort to survive the aftermath of this deadly attack off the American coast"--Provided by the publisher.

The Lusitania

unravelling the mysteries
2000
On May 7, 1915, the Lusitania was struck by a torpedo fired from a German submarine. It sank within twenty minutes, taking the lives of 1,198 people, including 128 children. The uproar following the sinking contributed to the entry of the United States into World War I. This book asserts that the Lusitania regularly carried sumuggled munitions from the United States to England, using innocent passengers as human shields. Moreover, the disaster could have been avoided had Britain sent ships to escort the liner as it entered the waters patrolled by German submarines. The controversy over what cargo the Lusitania carried, as well as the protection it should have received, has been debated by historians since its sinking.

The Mathews men

seven brothers and the war against Hitler's U-boats
2016
The German U-Boat war against American merchant men was deadly. In World War II, the U.S. Merchant Marine had twice the fatality rate of the U.S. Navy. William Geroux tells the tale of Mathews County, Virginia, caught in the thick of the fight, as it sent its men to sea, as it had for generations. It is a common mistake to believe that the Nazis did not come near America during World War II. The truth is that German U-boats patrolled the east coast constantly, waiting for ships to leave with supplies for the Allies. Until America's Air Force became stronger, the U-boats were difficult to destroy and the men of the Merchant Marine were often the only defense.
