Malin Fors is the superintendent of the police force in her small Swedish town of Linkoping, surrounded by forests and plains and usually snow. She is divorced with a teenage daughter, blond, and thirty-four years old. One frigid night in February, a very fat man is found mutilated and hung from a tree within sight of the village. Fors is assigned the case--finding the identity of the man and the killer threaten to bring sleepy old sins from Linkoping's past to light again.

Malin Fors, a divorced mother of a teenager and talented police superintendent in a small, isolated town, investigates the murder of an obese man who was found hanging from an oak tree, naked and horribly mutilated, in the middle of a snow-covered plain outside of town.
