Whe their mother can no longer support them, six siblings are sent by the Children's Aid Society of New York City to live with farm families in Missouri in 1860.
Three children anticipate a dull Thanksgiving at their aunt's house in New Mexico until, in an emergency, they are left alone with the old Indian housekeeper, who believes the surrounding woods are haunted by Indian spirits, and her rebel granddaughter who is secretly visiting the ghost town in the woods.
