After the Civil War, African Americans placed poignant "information wanted" advertisements in newspapers, searching for missing family members. During the slave years, families were often split up and sold to owners of other plantations, and sometimes to other states.

Examines African-American education and literacy during and after the Civil War, and traces the ways in which slaves learned to read and write and became teachers to other former slaves after the war.
