As he is preparing to attend middle school, Hank, who has learning differences and academic difficulties, gets an unexpected opportunity to audition for a performing arts school where his creativity and humor will be appreciated and nurtured.

For Hank, fourth grade does not start out on the right foot. First of all, he gets called to the principal's office on the very first day of school. Then the first assignment his teacher gives him is to write five paragraphs on "What You Did This Summer." Hank is terrified-writing one good sentence is hard for him, so how in the world is he going to write five whole paragraphs? Hank comes up with a plan: instead of writing what he did on vacation, he'll show what he did. But when Hank's "living essay" becomes a living disaster, he finds himself in detention. Strangely enough, however, detention ends up becoming a turning point in his life.

Hank Zipzer is looking forward to a skiing vacation with his dad and sister before his new baby brother arrives, until his mom calls to say the baby is coming early, but when a huge snowstorm strands them in Vermont, it is up to Hank to find a way to get them all safely back to New York before the baby arrives.

Hank Zipzer makes a deal with his dad that if he gets a "B+" in math he can play the lead in the school musical; and he must rely on the class brain, Heather Payne, for help.

Desperate to show his parents that he can be responsible, Hank believes roughing it on the school camping trip will be the perfect opportunity to prove himself. But he didn't count on being partnered with his nemesis, McKelty, or being in a leaky tent in a field full of cow pies.

Hank must decide whether to attend tae kwon do or an after school reading program run by his favorite teacher, and when he meets an interesting girl at Reading Gym, he gets into a complicated situation that even has him lying to his father.

Here's the story, My mom is having a baby, and the baby is going to share a room with me. As you can guess, I'm not very happy about that.

Hank Zipzer is not at all excited to hear that his mother is going to have a baby, and decides that in order to prepare for being a big brother, he needs a pet spider to help him learn responsibility.

Hank struggles through the ups and downs of friendship and the circle of life when he has a fight with Frankie and his sister's iguana lays forty-five eggs in their cable box.
