A fictional journal in which fifteen-year-old Yancy Aparicio details his adventure in the wilderness after he decides to run away from home because he is tired of his older brother's behavior and ends up staying on a ranch in the desert where he reflects on his relationships with his sibling, parents, and a girl from school and decides he needs to be more self-confident.

After Yancy's older brother, Will, attacks and injures his horse, Yancy packs up his things and rides off into the desert. During his absence, Yancy begins thinking about the path his life is taking and decides that now is the perfect time to stand up for himself.
