A young girl named DeeDee who is dealing with her dad who has disappeared, her sister's quincea?era, her brother dropping out of high school, disappointing her family by struggling in her new school, and being diagnosed with diabetes. She feels she will never fit in and will never find a best friend, until she meets River her neighbor with cochlear implants and they find out they both enjoy art, dance, and skateboarding. But when River transfers to her new school, instead of sticking up for him and risking being made fun of, DeeDee must decide keep to her best friend by standing up to her classmates, or stay silent.
