When third-grader Billy Burger takes the class pet ferret to the school assembly it gets away, and Billy finds himself in trouble with the school and his detective father.

When a storm forces them inside for recess, third-grader Billy and his friends sneak into the school library and turn it into a chaotic mess--so he organizes a book drive as an apology.

After Billy gets sent home for fighting with the bus bully, Randy, he's got extra time to do some community service. Inspired by a speech about bullies and mistreated animals from his grandmother, Billy decides to spend some time with the dogs down at the local pound. But he soon learns that walking dogs is no picnic. Can Billy survive the heat and exercise? Can he keep the dogs on leash and out of the butcher shop? Can Billy be a good citizen to all, even the bus bully?!.

His parents have placed the perpetually hungry Billy on a strict diet--no junk food--and despite the trouble it causes him, it looks like he will be in shape for the annual school jump-a-thon--which is interrupted by a trio of teenage thieves.

When third-grader Billy Burger gets into a fight with the Randy, the school bully, he is suspended, and his parents, while sympathetic, assign him to volunteer for the Shake-a-paw Animal Shelter, which is not so bad, except for the dog poop--and proves to have unexpected benefits when the Randy corners him in an alley.
