One thousand years from now, after human civilization has collapsed, the members of a small religious community are the world's last human survivors. In a world dominated by mega-corporation Beetle--whose infallible predictive algorithm has developed society to be the best possible version of itself--Beetle CEO Guy Matthias lives like the king of the world. Then, things fall apart for him in the midst of rumors of minor glitches in the system, an anomaly called "Zed," attacks from the hacker "Gogol," his wife threatening to leave over his infidelity, and the probable loss of a game-changing deal with China. Suddenly, Guy, at the top of the world, feels powerless.

Danny McCoyne searches for his five-year-old daughter, Ellis, while an unexplained surge in violence continues to sweep the globe, and Danny's efforts seem to drag him and Ellis deeper into this new world.
