Omakayas, a seven-year-old Native American girl of the Ojibwa tribe, lives through the joys of summer and the perils of winter on an island in Lake Superior in 1847.

Unfortunately this was also the week that businesses wanted to use as a profitable close to the shipping season on the Great Lakes. Caught on the lake, nearly thirty vessels were affected by the storm, one so intense that it caused the Split Rock Lighthouse to be built to protect ships of the future.
