If Jake's teacher, Mr. Hyde, gets too excited, he transforms into the misbehaving Creature, and when the class competes in the Whiz-BANG Science Fair, the students have to find a way to keep Creature's mischief from causing havoc.

Jake and his friends are playing in the local soccer tournament, and from the start everything goes wrong: they end up playing in banana suits (do not ask), Amelia, the fifth grade bully, forces her way on to the team and gets a yellow card, Jake injures his ankle--but worst of all, the chaos causes Mr. Hyde to turn into his alter ego, the Creature, a nasty imp bent on mischief.

On his first day at his new school Jake Jones meets the new teacher, Mr. Hyde (very nice, but turns into a naughty imp when upset), Mrs. Blount, the principal (a nasty tyrant whose punishments involve hard labor), and his wild classmates in 5B--and since it is almost impossible not to break at least one of the 142 school rules (or all of them) he soon finds his school life descending into chaos.

The fifth grade is going on a trip to the opening of Wacky Wilf's Wild Adventure Park, but when their teacher Mr. Hyde gets spooked on the ghost train and transforms into the Creature, Jake and his friends have to figure out a way to get him to change back--and keep his secret safe from the nasty principal, Mrs. Blunt.
