Novel written in 1912, tells the story of Anna Leath and George Darrow, two high society Americans in France whose renewed relationship is shaken by his casual sexual affair with Sophy Viner, an appealing woman of the lower classes who happens to be loved by Anna's stepson.

When twenty-year-old Paul Baumer and his classmates enlist in the German army during World War I, they are full of youthful enthusiam. Through the ensuing years of horror, Paul holds fast to a single vow: to fight against the principle of hate that meaninglessly pits young men of the same generation but different uniforms against one another.
