With her neighborhood in decline following the Watts riots and the devastation of Reaganomics and her family divided by secrets, violence, and identity crises, Camille Broussard hopes to use her love of family and of cooking to bring everyone back together by opening a restaurant and enlisting her family to help get the enterprise on its feet.

Forty-two-year-old Jessie is summoned home to Egret Island off the coast of South Carolina after her obsessively devout mother inexplicably cuts off her own finger, and finds herself oddly exhilarated to be free of her husband, and wildly attracted to Brother Thomas, a monk who has yet to take his final vows.

Interior designer Bartolomeo di Crespi has picked every decoration in Our Lady of Fatima church in New Jersey, but remodeling the church requires more help, and more ideas. Bartolomeo clashes with another designer, an artist, and a stained-glass craftsman during the project, and their work impacts the community inside the church and out.

Follows the childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood of Vivi, Teensy, Caro, and Necie from the time they first meet in the 1930s through their many experiences and years of friendship.
