Mildred Hubble, who has set out to keep her third year at Miss Cackle's Academy for Witches disaster-free, feels compelled to investigate her weird new teacher.

Mildred's attempts to lose her reputation as Cackle Academy's worst witch are fouled up by her enemy Ethel, who casts a very bad spell on her; then, Mildred devises a plan to rescue her beloved tabby cat, who has been deemed not good enough to be a witch's cat, and secretly takes him along on her school trip.

Mildred Hubble's first year at Miss Cackle's Academy for Witches starts off badly when she makes an enemy of the teacher's pet, Ethel; then, Mildred finds herself repeatedly pulled into mischief by the not-so-well-behaved new girl, Enid Nightshade.
