Ash's cabin

Fifteen-year-old Ash has never felt like they fit in, and the only person who ever really understood them was their Grandpa Edwin, but ever since his death, things have only gotten worse. Their parents haven't fully accepted their name change and newly shorn hair, and Ash is deeply concerned about the climate crisis that no one else seems to care about. So when Ash learns their family is planning on selling Grandpa Edwin's old ranch, they come up with a plan to find Grandpa's secret cabin in the woods and stay there forever. With their dog, Chase, Ash sets out into the California wilderness to find the cabin and learns to live off the land, but when a wildfire threatens their safety, Ash must make an impossible decision.

Not he or she, I'm me

"A child gets ready for a wonderful day. They gleefully get dressed, hug their parents, go to school, and play with friends. All the while, unapologetically reminding themselves that they are and can only be themselves. The nonbinary experience is brightly illustrated as we follow our main character through their typical day. The story's bouncy and fun refrain reminds all readers of gender-neutral pronouns and affirms the identities of nonbinary children--encouraging readers to practice empathy for themselves and others"--Provided by publisher.

She's more concerned with finding the perfect match for her cousin Charlotte, and working out why George is suddenly pulling away. The ribbon skirt

"Ten-year-old Anang wants to make a ribbon skirt, a piece of clothing typically worn by women in the Anishinaabe tradition, for an upcoming powwow. Anang sets off to gather the materials needed to make the skirt and turns to those around them - their family, their human and turtle friends, the crows, and even the lake itself - for help. What if it's still there, waiting for him to come back . . .or for Ash to find it? To Ash, that maybe-mythical cabin is starting to feel like the perfect place for a fresh start and an escape from the miserable feeling of alienation that haunts their daily life. But making the wilds your home isn't easy. And as much as Ash wants to be alone . . .can they really be happy alone? Can they survive alone?" --Provided by publisher.

But this experience also deepens their relationship to their ancestors, providing added support from another realm. Walela's diagnosis becomes a catalyst for their self-realization. As they fill out forms in the insurance office in downtown Los Angeles or travel to therapy in wealthier neighborhoods, they begin to understand that cancer is where all forms of their oppression intersect: Disabled. Fat. Black. Queer. Nonbinary"--Provided by publisher.
