From 1994 to 1998, DiverseWorks, an alternative art space in Houston, Texas, presented DiverseDialogues, a performance and exhibition program that brought nationally recognized artists to Houston for extended residencies. Interacting with varied social and cultural communities in Houston in addition to more than thirty organizations around the country, DiverseDialogues resulted in seventeen performances and exhibitions which are documented in this publication, both on DVD as well as in a printed catalog detailing the events and the artists. Many of these artists created new works with strong political and social statements at a time when publicly funded arts in the United States were under siege. This DVD is a reminder of the importance of the voice of the artist and the record of the innovative creative process which supports that voice.
