Chasing the moon

Chasing the Moon reimagines the race to the moon for a new generation, upending much of the conventional mythology surrounding the effort. The series recasts the Space Age as a fascinating stew of scientific innovation, political calculation, media spectacle, visionary impulses, and personal drama. With no narration and using only archival footage - including a visual feast of previously lost or overlooked material - the film features a diverse cast of characters who played key roles in these historic events.

Last stand at Little Big Horn

Compares the Native American image of the battle at Little Bighorn with that of the white man, told through journals, oral accounts, and Indian ledger drawings, as well as the archival and feature films.

Slavery in America

Covers slave ships and auctions, the "triangle trade," plantation life, insurrections, events leading up to the Civil War and emancipation, reactions toslavery, and profiles of slaves and abolitionists.

Marcus Garvey

Uses a wealth of archival film, photographs and documents to uncover the story of this Jamaican immigrant, who between 1916 and 1921 built the largest black mass movement in world history. It explores Garvey's dramatic successes and failures before his fall into obscurity. Among the film's most powerful sequences are interviews with people who witnessed the Garvey movement first hand more than 80 years ago. These interviews communicate the appeal of Garvey's revolutionary ideas to a generation of African Americans , and reveal how he invested hundreds and thousands of black men and women with a newfound sense of pride.

Wyatt Earp

Explores the life and legend of lawman Wyatt Earp. Examines the aspects of his life that gained him everlasting notoriety, notably his participation in the shootout at the O.K. Corral, and considers his role as both a hero and icon of the American West.

Jesse James

Examines the life and the legend of the infamous outlaw Jesse James. Looks at his formative years in a Southern household dependent on slave labor and as a member of a vicious band of Missouri guerrillas during the Civil War. Describes his life as a violent criminal, as he and his gang moved on to robbing banks, stagecoaches, and railroads in the post-war era. Relates how James was eventually killed when one of his own gang members shot him in the back for the bounty on his head.

Draws on archival materials to chronicle the life and legacy of William Cody, also known as Buffalo Bill.

Annie Oakley

Explores the life and legend of sharpshooter Annie Oakley. Examines the apparent contradictions in the life of the star of the Wild West Show, who lived her entire life east of the Mississippi, opposed women's suffrage, and was a Quaker.

Religion in America

A collection of essays describing religious themes and developments in America's history such as the words of Quaker leader William Penn, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel; and contains profiles of over 150 key figures, maps, graphs, and tables.
