With a homework pass as the prize, everyone in Shelby Bloom's fourth grade class wants to win the talent show, especially Shelby and her nemesis, Brooke; after Brooke sabotages Shelby's stand-up comedy act, Shelby and her friend Ajay decide to join forces in a comedy skit--and plot their revenge on Brooke.

Disturbed by her student's rude behavior Shelby's fourth grade teacher decides to give out a "Good Person Award," and Shelby and her nemesis Brooke are instantly in a competition with each other; the trouble is that most of their ideas about being a good person do not actually involve helping or being polite to other people--but in the end Shelby finds that what she does best is to make people laugh.

Ten-year-old Shelby Bloom loves jokes but she is horrified when her mother posts an embarrassing video of her, a video that mean girl Brooke makes sure everyone at school sees. Shelby does not like being the laughingstock, and she does not like being paired with Brooke's best friend, Tessa, on a school health project, but it turns out there are compensations, and soon Shelby has the class laughing with her instead of at her.
