After John Tyree enlists in the Army after high school, he meets Savannah Lynn Curtis in North Carolina where she works with Habitat for Humanity. But when she promises to wait for John after his tour of duty, both of them are unaware of the tragedy of 9/11 and how it will impact both of their lives. Savannah sends John a "Dear John" letter because she wants a lasting commitment and not a "one night stand" that he seems to favor.
