It's been ten years since famous magician Violet Volk vanished during her big disappearing-act finale, never to be seen again. Her sister, Sasha, has created a life out of the spotlight for herself and her daughter, Quinn, after inheriting her mother's salon. But as the tenth anniversary draws near, Sasha is contacted by Cameron Frank, the host of a podcast devoted to all things Violet, about doing an interview. Sasha wants nothing to do with him, but Quinn finds herself becoming more and more curious about the aunt she always idolized. Sasha soon begins experiencing strange sleepwalking episodes and coincidences that seem to be connected to Violet, and she's forced to confront her feelings about what really happened all those years ago.

During a New Year's Eve party just before Oona Lockhart turns nineteen, she ponders her future choices--whether to stay with her boyfriend and band in Brooklyn or leave for London to study economics. As the ball drops, she's transported into the future life of her fifty-one-year-old self. And each year thereafter on December thirty-first, Oona travels back and forward to various parts of her life in the future where she learns about living in the moment and the consequences of past decisions.
