Vanya Smurov, new to St. Petersburg, is taken under the wing of Larion Stroop who introduces the young man to a world of art and beauty, but when he learns that Stroop is a homosexual, Vanya goes in search of a more traditional existence in the Volga countryside, only to find himself wondering what really drew him to Stroop in the first place.
