On 5th Avenue in New York City, two very different men are shopping for gifts for the women they love. Gary is buying his girlfriend Rachel a charm bracelet, partly to thank her for paying for their holiday-of-a-lifetime to New York, and Ethan Green is picking out a ring for the woman who showed him how to be happy again after the death of his wife.

The author recalls the summer of 1945 when she and her friend Marty Garrett, fresh from the University of Iowa, were hired as pages at Tiffany & Co., becoming the first women to ever work on the sales floor where they rubbed elbows with the rich and famous, celebrated VJ Day in Times Square, danced away the weekends, and created lasting memories.

The hillbilly-turned-Manhattanite at the center of "Breakfast at Tiffany's" shares not only the author's philosophy of freedom but also his fears and anxieties. "Other Voices, Other Rooms" begins as thirteen-year-old Joel Knox, after losing his mother, is sent from New Orleans to rural Alabama to live with his estranged father--who is nowhere to be found.
