The first day of Mary Paine's junior year is hard. Her brother Paul has just died and she's estranged from her best friend James. Even worse, she is seeing people who others say are not really there! One bright spot are three new kids, Abigail, Thomas, and Daniel. Dan asks Mary on a date and she learns that she--and they--are Seers. They can see ghosts! From his research, Daniel suspects that some sort of ritual opens or closes a Portal. He thinks that four people are sacrificed near a Portal in the ritual. The Seers are not convinced he has enough evidence to prove his theory. But when three bodies are found near the Portal in Hawthorne Harbor, the Seers believe Dan may be right. After the Junior/Senior Lock-In fire the Portal in Hawthorne Harbor is wide open. The Seers are busy taking care of ghosts and are amazed at how many there are. Every day since the Portal opened, Mary has secretly gone there to watch all the ghosts come through. She is looking for her brother. A ghost that looks like Paul steps thorough, and Mary is disappointed when it is not him. But who is this ghost, and why can't Mary bring herself to take care of him? The lock-in

At the house shared by Abigail, Thomas, and Daniel the three explain to Mary and James that they search the country for Portals to the dead. They believe a Portal exists in Hawthorne Harbor and the Fire that destroyed the old high school had something to do with it. When a fire breaks out during the Junior/Senior Lock-In exactly fifty years after the Fire, it seems they are right! But are they? And if so, who--or what--is controlling it? The Portal in Hawthorne Harbor is opening. Aaron Hawthorne must keep it closed. He plans the ritual and counts on his nephew John to assist him. But John is preoccupied with strange dreams, and thoughts that do not seem to be his own. When John steals items from Aaron's house that jeopardize the ritual, it seems he wants the Portal to open. Then John threatens Aaron's life, and Aaron admits what he has feared. That's not really John who is trying to kill him. But if it's not John, who is it? The Hawthornes are the founding family of Hawthorne Harbor. The Hawthornes have always been close to the Owens--another of the town's old families. Aaron Hawthorne is the principal at Hawthorne Harbor High School. He and his nephew John are Seers, as have been other Hawthornes through the generations.
