In 1940 Paris, 20-year-old Michel Bonnet, to escape the Nazis, joins the circus where he first sees Frieda-dark-haired, mysterious and also fleeing the Germans-who is harboring a secret that places him in more danger than he could ever know.

Things get personal when Will Parker's friend from Hart and Halloway's Traveling Circus and Sideshow, Ruby Donner, winds up dead, and the police's prime suspect is Will's mentor Valentin Kalishenko. Will and her boss, world-famous detective Lillian Pentecost, begin to investigate but soon discover Will's former family aren't telling them the whole truth.
