Seventeen-year-old Emery Land experiences seizures during which she seems to travel through space and time to a mysterious town, and one day she escapes the hospital where a team of doctors monitor her and travels to Esperanza, the town she visits during her episodes. In Esperanza, Emery meets Asher Clarke, whose desire to perform good Samaritan acts to atone for the death of a loved one is connected to Emery.
