Twelve-year-old Allison, having watched her father almost kill a man, a crime for which he spent years in prison, comes to a new understanding of his actions at the age of forty when her daughter dies in a senseless accident during a summer marked by the burnings of the churches of historic Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
