Teaching the gifted and talented in the middle school

There are perhaps two million gifted and talented students in today's elementary and secondary schools. Unfortunately, fewer than half are ever identified as such, and even fewer are offered opportunities to engage their advanced abilities. A report to Congress in 1972 confirmed the fact that many gifted and talented youngsters perform far below their intellectual potential. Bright minds will not necessarily make their own way ; schools must strive to identify bright students and to maximize their abilities.
