In 1992 the world is caught up in the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the Balkan Wars. In Portland, Oregon, Julie's family life is routine and boring, and no one talks about her older brother, a one-time Olympic-hopeful swimmer who now lives in Berlin. And then the girls' swim team captain tries to recruit her. If Julie swims, she might just have a chance to find her brother or finally let him go.
