Presents a bilingual biography of Jos? Mart?, who fell in love with the natural beauty of his native Cuba at a young age. At that time, Cuba was a Spanish colony and slavery was the law of the land. Witnessing the cruelties of slavery on a sugar plantation, Mart? pledged to use his writing to advocate for Cuban independence in order to stop slavery. Declared an enemy of Spain by age seventeen, Mart? was compelled to flee, traveling the world before settling in New York City.
