Teenage Giovanna's face was pretty as a child's, but now she has become a spiteful adolescent with often an ugly scowl. She does not know who she is anymore, so she sets out into the two halves of her city of Naples--the heights, where there is the appearance of refinement; and the depths and all its vanity and excess--in order to find herself, if she can.
