Rendered outcast from Eleanor of Aquitaine's court, Marie de France finds herself sent to England to take over the job of a prioress in an impoverished abbey. All her dreams and youthful passions needing to be suppressed, she throws herself into her new devotion to her sister nuns, and increasingly into her supernatural visions. However, the world is changing in frightening ways, and if she does not fight for herself, she will be bowled under.
