Seventh graders use science to solve mysteries.

Sam, Egg, Gum and Cat, and the other members of the Franklin Middle School Science Club are on a guided tour of Greater River City Air Force Base (otherwise known as Zone 99), an aspiring science museum, and Gum is convinced that if they can sneak away from the group they will find evidence of aliens--and it is up to the reader to choose how their adventure unfolds.

While their sixth-grade class is on a trip to the River City Conservatory the four young detectives, Sam, Egg, Gum, and Cat, investigate the theft of a rare fruit from the botanical garden, and it is up to the reader to determine the course of their adventure.

When the Franklin Middle School's sixth grade arrives at the amusement park, they find that the electronic cards that serve as all purpose tickets and game trackers have disappeared, so Sam, Egg, Gum, and Cat set out to solve the mystery and save the class field trip--and it is up to the reader to determine the course of their investigation.

When the class bully disappears on a field trip to the River City Zoo, James Shoo, known as "Gum" and the other sixth-grade detectives are determined to find out what happened, and it is up to the reader to choose what direction their investigation will take.

When a rare coin and a strange code are uncovered in McKenna School, Malcolm and the other classroom pets of the Midnight Academy take on their most challenging assignment yet and, through their investigations, they just might save the school from closing.
