The Dunwiddle Magic School (fifth to eighth grade) is intended for children whose magic is "upside-down" like Dory (who turns into a combination of a kitten and dragon) and Pepper (whose uncontrollable "fiercing" terrifies everyone around her)--so the Show Off, where fifth grade students are supposed to showcase their skills, does not really seem like a good idea.

Nory, Elliott, Andres, and Bax find their lives forever changed when they attend the Dunwiddle Magic School's Upside-Down Magic class.

When a flood forces Nory and her best friends to evacuate Dunwiddle and relocate to prestigious Sage Academy, the upside-down magic students have a hard time fitting in.

Abby and Jonah take a trip through the magic mirror and finally end up in Jack and the beanstalk (which happens to be Jonah's favorite story ever)--but things soon start to go wrong, and the children have to try and set the tale right, even if it means trading their dog, Prince, for the magic beans, climbing the beanstalk (three times!), and reaching an amicable settlement with the giants (Magnus and Philippa, who are really quite nice), and the sneaky trader, Devin, to get their dog back.

The magic mirror has a crack and it sends Abby, Jonah, and Prince into the mixed up tale of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and they soon find that Goldy is in need of a lot of gold to get her father out of jail, and so they find themselves negotiating between the Bears, who want honey, and Rumpelstiltskin, who just wants a friend or two--but King Ned is just plain greedy and somehow the children and Goldy's father have to escape from the king's jail, and get back to the portal to return home.

Tonight is the Big Night sleepover at Dunwiddle Magic School, when all the fifth graders stay overnight at school and participate in the scavenger hunt, except Nory's friend Elliott is attending a concert at rival Sage Academy where he plans to attend after the winter break--but if Nory can convince her fellow upside-down magic friends to take the hunt seriously, cooperate, and win, than maybe she can convince Elliott to stay at Dunwiddle.
