Emily consoles herself with letters to Mei Yuk when her best friend Alice appears to like Florence better as the climax of the Queen Victoria birthday celebration nears, but when they head for disaster, she gathers her strength to save them.

When Emily includes her new friend Mei Yuk in her social life but finds things changing with her best friend Alice and must discover the importance of staying true to herself.

In Victoria, British Columbia, in 1896, ten-year-old Emily travels to the city's Chinatown to help her family's servant, Hing, after he has been wrongly accused of breaking an expensive vase, and, once there, learns about the lives and culture of Chinese immigrants.
