Khadra Shamy, a Syrian immigrant raised in Indiana to be observant of Islamic customs, becomes confused about what it means to be Muslim and American, and after the rape and murder of a friend, a disastrous marriage, and a brief return to Syria, she comes back to the U.S. in the late 1980s to find answers to her questions and direction for her life.
